in the days of old and the anally retentive anglers used to think that you could not catch carp in winter, there were tools designed to maximise the best chances. one of them was a brass tube with holes all along it which had a weight at the bottom and an eye on the top.
in the tube was a traditional glass thermometer.
you attached the mainline to the eye and cast it to where you intended to fish. after leaving it a while you then reeled in an took your reading. that was more accurate but it all seems pointless to me.
