catfish at houchins

Postby carper_rob » Wed May 24, 2006 2:30 pm

hello all. I just wonderd if anyone could give me any advice about catching a cat out of houchins?!?! I have done several nights there now but without any sucess. I have noticed that many people cast into the middle when going for cats, instead of casting into the margine, could anyone give me a reason for why people do this? Anyother suggestions would also be apreciated e.g any proovern baits, casting spots etc...

thanks,
rob

cats tend to frequent the areas around drop off points and deeper areas so that they can swim upwards on their prey. the swim upward and engulf them in the flow of water through their gills, once in the mouth the swim with their mouth open back downward to use the water to force the fish onto the crushing pads.

i would suggest that its not actually out in the middle you want unless you find a hole or something but just past the ledges. but they will be getting more active now and will be all round the lake.

ok thanks, could you suggest any riggs or baits 2 use? Iv currently been using 21mm hallibut pellets but i just wonderd what other people use and if there was anything more affective? Do u mind me asking what swim you use aswell, Iv tryed the far bank on the right hand side as you look from the car park and the bit between the 2 lakes on the same side.

thanks

Carefully, I suppose.

Might be easier if you asked someone to go and catch one for you.

I think for lead set-up running rigs might be a start.
As when i fished it we got alot of ghost runs. Maybe becasue the cats felt the resistance of the lea and droped it.

There have been a lot of negative or aggressive posts on here recently and I went thru one night removing a load of them, your post may have fallen into that category.
I have had complaints from members saying that when they ask a question they get unhelpfull answers so I am trying to stop it before people leave the forum.
Cheers

Awesome was not being unhelpful. He was stating facts. Unfortunately that is how a lot of our members are now fishing for cats. Far from being unhelpful he was in fact highlighting a very serious problem. Members are fishing for cats using pike tackle. FACT.

Carper Rob, To try and provide some help I would suggest that a simple rig with Halibut Pellet will get some cat interest, just on the bottom not popped or even pooped up  .
I have fished where the marginal slope meets the bottom at about a rod length out usually with some tree overhang and had cats from 3 different banks, so I cannot say any particular hot spot. I have just fished where a swim was available :!:
I suggest using braided hooklinks - as I lost one that munched my 8lb mono link! Hope this useful.
