Hello to you all,

Im looking for a bit of info.
Im an experienced Carp angler, 34 years old.

Having moved from Coggeshall to Colchester and not wanting to spend £250 plus on a syndicate membership for Lyatts due to becoming a Dad, im thinking of joining CAPS.

It's always a daunting prospect joining a new society or water and I'm wondering which of your lakes to focus my time on as a new comer.

What lakes fill up quickly? where can i get on late Friday afternoon/evening to do a night or where can i jump on first light Saturday for a day session?

Now i've got a little boy the days of weekend sessions have vanished off into the horizon :P

Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks all in advance :)

What's in Snake pit apart from weed then?

Thought there was only a 30lb+ Common left now?

And approx 50-60 fish in total.

Thats what the people down there said when I fished it anyways so I could be totally wrong.

bit more than that mate ,the common is a bit bigger than 30+ now ,no one really knows how many carp are in that water lets just say it might chuck up some nice fish this year well worth a try :D.

It's always tough joining somewhere new, im 90% sure I'll be joining this weekend so I'll have to get out and about and have a look around some of the waters.

I believe the 50-60 fish relate to the carp only - which for 12 acres is pretty sparse. But that, along with the weed and snags is why its aimed at the experienced specimen carp angler. There plenty of other species - incl a handful of cats. Lots of tench as we know. But the figure of 50-60 is for the carp only.

Carpers being carpers don't believe in the existence of other species - hence the answer you have received from them of '50-60 fish in TOTAL'.

And the common is now 40+

Oh busy days at Snake again are a-beckoning...

If short sessions are the order of the day for you, then Olivers, Bovington lakes and Pebmarsh are perfect for you. Due to the weed and snags, Snake requires a fair bit of time to be put into it - plumbing/leading etc; all of which eats into the actual fishing time doesn't it.

Then there's the famous Layer Pit - PERFECT for short and days sessions - especially as you can't night fish there. But when you join CAPS, you are not allowed to fish Layer. You have to either join the waiting list, or do 4 work parties to be allowed to pay the one-off upgrade fee (either £30 or £35 - I cannot remember) to obtain the Layer upgrade. If you join now, theres still about 4 or 5 work parties left to be done at Layer I believe. Get on those and you'll get the upgrade this year - otherwise you'll have to wait until next year. If you've only got short sessions to look forward to , Layer is definitely the place for you.

As you no doubt know, that's the difference between a club and a syndicate. You'll find the best places all busy at peak times. Lots of good info here though and certainly well worth joining if you do decide to.

The Snake Pit sounds like a good choice but you do join when the popularity of the lake is about to rocket again with the NEW 'Snake Pit Common' and as Widey says, it's not the sort of place you can turn up and 'chuck & chance' (might end up in a sub-aqua forest!).

Best fishes.

P.s. I don't suppose your name's Dave is it? :D

a good starting point would be to go to angling essentials to get your membership and have a word in there at the same time. there is a nice guy in there who is a confused transvestite who seems to be a font of all knowledge. By sort of transvestite i mean that he goes under a girlie name.

I will have you know that the name "Kim" originates from the far east and means "Ruler". Transvestite indeed!!!

Yes but they continue through until all the work has been done - there may still be some left to do.
