Website Updates

Postby webmaster » Sun Apr 10, 2005 8:16 pm

Today I have incorporated the following changes to the forum:

1. Reduced interval delay between posts.

2. User Names may now be changed on the forum.

3. New words have been added to the profanity filter, if you type in certain rude words they will be replaced with a more politicaly correct version enclosed in inverted commas.

4. New section "Just for Fun" added in Members Only section.

Drivel filter takes a long time to manually operate other than ejecting continual offenders (some are on very dodgy ground).

New words have been added to the profanity filter though as noted by dave W.

 We have gradually been running out of room on the site, however the webspace has now been increased from 35mb to 250mb :yikes: which should enable me to start adding more pice to the gallery etc - Sorry to those who have been waiting :whistling: for their pics to be put up but I have been waiting for the upgrade.

More Smilies have been added

AOL user problems

Postby webmaster » Sun Jan 08, 2006 2:14 pm

I have recently changed the navigation methods used within the site resulting in some users not being able to use the site, particularly AOL users, AOL speed up their service by copying pages that are reularly viewed by their users to their own servers so when AOL users log in they are actually viewing an AOL Backup (cache). If I make changes to the website it can take quite a time for AOL to catch up and if their system doesnt store all the files that have been modified then confusion reigns. If certain files are not changed very often the AOL doesnt refresh its memory very often, whereas the forum changes every day so it doesnt store that info and sends it direct to the site.
Mr recent mod was to the navigation panel on the main website and all the buttons and associated stylesheets, it appears that AOL has picked up the change to the Nav panel but not the associated files hence no buttons being displayed, hopefully they will update their cache soon.
AOL are not at all popular in the web designer circles.

AOL' also use a built-in browser to temporarily store images and text from the Web pages on your hard drive in a storage area called a cache. When the cache fills up, performance can slow down, and your hard drive may run out of space. When you visit a web page for the second and future times, your browser is supposed to do a date/time check on the cached copy of the page you are visiting, to see if the Internet copy is newer and load it if it is. Sometimes, browsers don't work properly. Refresh or reload is supposed to fix this problem, but occasionally that doesn't work either. You will need to clear your cache.

To clear the browser cache:

1. On the Settings menu on the AOL toolbar, click Preferences.
2. In the Organization section of the Preferences window, click Internet properties (WWW).
3. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Files.
4. Click OK.

Weather page

Postby The Laird » Sat Feb 11, 2006 10:25 am

Today I have updated the Weather Page giving a selection of weather forecasts etc. One of interest is xcweather as it uses "Real Time" data to give wind directions across the country, if you place your cusor over each arrow you will see wind forecasts over the next few days for that area.

New map with aerial photo mouse-over for Bovington lakes, eventually all maps are planned to have aerial photo mouse-overs. It may take a bit of time though as they are very labour intensive to create.

As most of you are aware the latest version of the official site forum looked very similar to this forum. In order to distinguish this one from the "copy" :D I have changed the colours a bit.

If anyone has problems displaying or reading with the new colours please let me know.

I have changed the colour of the New Post indicator to red so that it is easier to see new posts.

Satelite photo/maps

Postby webmaster » Wed Jan 30, 2008 2:57 pm

Ive added aerial photgraphs/maps to all of the lakes and river pages on the website, to view the maps simply click on the spinning globe which can be found on each of the pages, this one shows Olivers Lake.

<a href="http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.77912&lon=0.638439&z=17.3&r=0&src=msl" target="satelite"><img border="0" src="http://www.caps.org.uk/images/earth_spinning.gif" width="50" height="50"></a>

I have pinpointed most of the car parks & layby's so that drivers can target their objectives. You can zoom in/out of the images using + & - keys and move all around using the arrow keys.

I have added new pages in the "Lakes" & "Gallery" pages to cater for the new waters at Great Oakley.

I have also added Google Maps to all the waters in the "Lakes" section of the website, giving details of the waters, satelite images and the option to get directions from any location.
Cheers

Hi Folks

Whats happened to the forum!!

I am in the process of upgrading the forum to a higher spec more powerfull forum with many extra functions, ive imported all of the topics from the old forum, however some of the operations are not fully compatible, so over the next few weeks I will be updating the software to work with the old data.

With the new software you can add friends or block foes, get a birthday greeting etc.

Please start by updating your profile, including your birthday, NOTE for added security you will be required to enter your Name, membership number and the current gate lock number.

Usergroups are now accessible via your User Control Panel

When the data was imported from the old forum, for some strange reason off site avatars have had their dimensions changed/stretched, if yours has been stretched go to you profile and change the avatar sizes.
